A dialog box is a pop up window that requests additional information or allows the adjustment of settings. The dialog box might appear based on user input, for example a menu selection or toolbar icon. Alternatively it might appear spontaneously due to a notification or autonomous process. Once visible it might be a modal dialog, which prevents interaction with other parts of the application while it is visible; or a non-modal dialog, which is more like a small floating window allowing the user to interact with it, or the rest of the application at will.
